Start by understanding the cause.
Hair loss can affect people of different genders and ages and may be gradual or sudden, temporary or ongoing. It may happen for a range of reasons, including genetic hair thinning, hormonal changes, stress, illness, medicines, dietary deficiencies and scalp or immune-related conditions.
Our GPs can review your symptoms, medical and family history, examine your hair and scalp, and arrange tests when appropriate. We then discuss what is likely causing the hair loss and whether treatment or specialist referral is the most appropriate next step.
What to know before you book.
Possible causes
Common causes include androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata, hormonal changes, scalp infection, medicines, medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, PCOS, thyroid imbalance and nutritional deficiencies such as iron, zinc, biotin or vitamin D.
Assessment and tests
A GP may review hormone levels and nutritional status, examine the scalp and follicles and, if needed, arrange blood tests or a scalp biopsy. This helps identify the cause before any treatment plan is discussed.
When to see a GP
Book an assessment if your hair loss is sudden, patchy, worsening, affecting other areas of the body, accompanied by scalp pain, itching, redness or other symptoms, or causing concern or distress.
