Medical termination is a non-surgical option for ending an early pregnancy using prescribed medicines. Our doctors provide confidential, non-judgemental care and clear information so you can understand the process and make an informed decision.
Before treatment, a clinical assessment is required to confirm pregnancy timing and location and determine whether this option is suitable. Care may include blood testing, ultrasound, aftercare instructions and planned follow-up appointments.
What to know before you book.
Suitability
Medical termination may be available up to nine weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period. It may not be suitable in some circumstances, including an IUD being in place, suspected ectopic pregnancy, certain bleeding or adrenal conditions, severe anaemia, some medicines, or limited access to emergency healthcare. Your doctor will review your complete medical history and individual circumstances.
What to expect
Cramping usually begins one to four hours after the second medicine and may be stronger than normal period cramps. Heavy bleeding and passing clots or tissue are expected at first, then bleeding should reduce. You will receive written instructions explaining pain relief, expected symptoms and when to contact the clinic or seek urgent medical assistance.
Follow-up care
Follow-up appointments are arranged at approximately seven and 14 days, according to your clinical plan. Follow-up testing is used to confirm the pregnancy has ended, review your recovery and discuss ongoing health, emotional support or contraception needs.

What medical termination involves
A medical termination ends an early pregnancy without surgery or anaesthesia. It uses two prescribed medicines: mifepristone, followed 36–48 hours later by misoprostol. The second medicine causes the uterus to contract so the pregnancy can pass.
Eligibility
In Australia, medical termination may be an option up to nine weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period. Suitability requires clinical assessment and confirmation of pregnancy timing and location.
When it may not be suitable
Some health conditions and medicines require further assessment or an alternative approach. You must be able to access emergency medical care during the 14 days after starting treatment. If you have an IUD, it must be assessed and removed before treatment.
Pain, bleeding and support
Cramping commonly begins one to four hours after the second medicine and may be stronger than menstrual cramps; bleeding is also expected and may initially be heavy. Contact the clinic as directed if you have no bleeding, persistent pain, fever, chills, unusual discharge, prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea, or ongoing pregnancy symptoms.
When to seek urgent help
Seek urgent medical care for very heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, faintness, weakness, breathing difficulty or any symptom that feels serious. If the situation is an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) or attend the nearest hospital emergency department.
