Service information

What to know before you book.

IUD insertion

A hormonal IUD is a small, T-shaped device placed inside the uterus by a trained clinician. It slowly releases a progestogen hormone and provides long-acting, reversible contraception.

IUD removal

An IUD can be removed when it expires, when you want to change contraception, or when you are planning a pregnancy. Your doctor can also discuss replacement during the same visit when appropriate.

Detailed service information

What to expect.

Your doctor will explain the procedure, benefits, possible risks and aftercare before you decide to proceed.

Consultation before insertion

During your initial consultation, your doctor will discuss your medical history, contraception goals and whether a hormonal IUD is suitable for you. They will explain preparation, pain-relief options, expected bleeding changes, costs and when the procedure can be arranged.

IUD insertion

During insertion, a speculum is placed in the vagina and the IUD is passed through the cervix into the uterus using a dedicated inserter. Cramping or discomfort can occur during and after the procedure. Your clinician will explain what is expected and when to seek medical advice.

IUD removal

Removal is generally a short procedure. The clinician gently draws on the IUD threads so the device folds and passes through the cervix. Fertility can return promptly after removal, so discuss alternative contraception beforehand if you do not wish to become pregnant.

Protection and follow-up

A hormonal IUD does not protect against sexually transmissible infections. Your doctor will advise when contraceptive protection begins, whether temporary backup contraception is needed, and what follow-up is appropriate for you.
