Yellow Fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness found in parts of Africa and Central and South America. Vaccination may be recommended for your protection or required for entry and transit.
Requirements can change, so check every destination and transit country before travelling. A consultation allows your doctor to review your itinerary, health history and vaccine suitability.
What to know before you book.
Who may need vaccination
Vaccination is generally recommended for eligible travellers aged nine months and older who are visiting an area with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission.
When to arrange it
Arrange your travel consultation early. An International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis becomes valid 10 days after your Yellow Fever vaccination.

Destination requirements
Yellow Fever vaccination may be recommended or required for travel through affected parts of Africa and Central or South America. Examples can include Angola, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Brazil, Colombia and Peru. This is not a complete list, and requirements may change, so check your full itinerary.
Timing and protection
Your vaccination certificate becomes valid 10 days after the vaccine is given. A single dose generally provides lifelong protection, and routine booster doses are not usually needed.
Suitability and precautions
Tell your doctor about severe egg allergy, a previous serious vaccine reaction, immune-system conditions or treatment, thymus disorders, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Infants under nine months and adults aged 60 or older also require careful assessment. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks for your circumstances.
Entering Australia
Australia does not refuse entry solely because a traveller does not have proof of Yellow Fever vaccination. If you arrive from a Yellow Fever risk area without a valid certificate, a biosecurity officer may provide an action card explaining what to do if symptoms develop within six days of leaving that area.
