Prepare before departure

Travel advice based on where you are going and what you will be doing.

International travel may expose you to infections that are uncommon in Australia. The vaccines and preventive measures you need depend on your destination, transit countries, activities, accommodation, length of stay and individual health.

Camberwell Medical Group provides country-specific travel advice, recommended immunisations and assessment for travellers who become unwell after returning home.

Travel consultation

Individual preparation for your itinerary.

Start early because some vaccine courses require more than one dose or need time to provide protection.

Vaccines

Travel vaccines commonly stocked or available by arrangement.

Stock changes and some vaccines must be ordered. Contact reception before your appointment if you need a particular vaccine.

Yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccine may be recommended for risk areas or required for entry or transit. It must be administered by an authorised centre when certification is needed.

Hepatitis A and B

Hepatitis A vaccination may be recommended for many overseas destinations. Hepatitis B risk depends on destination, length of stay, activities, medical care and possible blood or sexual exposure.

Typhoid

Typhoid vaccination may be recommended for travel to regions where typhoid is common, particularly when food and water hygiene may be uncertain.

Tetanus and pertussis

Your consultation includes checking whether routine tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccination is current and whether a booster is recommended.

Polio and meningococcal disease

Some destinations, outbreaks, activities or entry requirements may make polio or meningococcal vaccination relevant.

Rabies

Rabies pre-exposure vaccination can be obtained when recommended, including for higher-risk destinations, longer stays, remote travel or likely animal contact. Avoid animal bites even after vaccination.

Routine vaccination

Make sure your everyday vaccines are up to date.

Travel increases exposure opportunities and may take you to places where diseases controlled in Australia remain common.

MMR

Your clinician can check protection against measles, mumps and rubella. Measles occurs in many overseas countries and outbreaks can affect travellers.

Influenza and COVID-19

Influenza circulates year-round in tropical regions and during different seasons overseas. Current influenza and COVID-19 vaccination may be recommended based on timing, destination and individual risk.

Age, occupation and medical risk

Other routine or special-risk vaccines may be relevant because of your age, occupation, lifestyle, pregnancy, immune status or underlying medical conditions.

Yellow fever travel

Vaccination requirements and certificates.

Some countries require documented proof of yellow fever vaccination even when a traveller is only transiting through another country.

Check every destination and transit point

Review the current entry requirements for all countries on your itinerary, including airport transit. Requirements can change and may differ from medical recommendations.

Allow at least 10 days

For a first yellow fever vaccination, the international certificate generally becomes valid 10 days after the dose.

Clinical suitability

Age, pregnancy, allergies, immune conditions and previous vaccine reactions may affect suitability. A clinician must assess vaccination risk against travel risk.

Accredited centre

Only an authorised Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre can administer the vaccine and issue an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis.

Beyond vaccination

Practical advice for common travel health risks.

Vaccination is only one part of staying well overseas.

Food and water

Your clinician can discuss safer food and water choices and preparation for travellers’ diarrhoea based on your destination.

Mosquito-borne illness

Travel advice may include insect repellent, protective clothing, mosquito nets and discussion of malaria prevention where relevant.

Animal bites

Avoid contact with dogs, monkeys, bats and other mammals. Any bite, scratch or saliva exposure should be washed promptly and assessed urgently, even if you received pre-travel rabies vaccine.

Medicines and documents

Plan adequate regular medicine supplies and carry relevant prescriptions, medical information and vaccination documentation.

Returning travellers

Seek assessment if you become unwell after travel.

Tell the clinic where you travelled, when you returned and any possible exposures. Symptoms such as fever, rash, persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty or jaundice may need prompt assessment.

Call before attending if you have fever or another potentially infectious illness so the team can advise how to arrive safely. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Bring your itinerary

Dates, destinations, accommodation, food or water exposure, insect bites, animal contact and treatment received overseas can help guide assessment.

Fees & Vaccine Costs

Travel consultations and vaccines are generally privately billed.

Costs depend on consultation length, vaccines required, number of doses and whether any products need to be ordered.

Reception can confirm appointment requirements, current stock and available vaccine pricing.
