Influenza prevention

Reduce your risk of influenza and serious complications.

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can cause severe illness, particularly in babies, older people, pregnant people and those with certain medical conditions.

Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for everyone aged six months and over. Camberwell Medical Group provides both National Immunisation Program-funded vaccines for eligible patients and private seasonal vaccines.

National Immunisation Program

Who may be eligible for a free seasonal flu vaccine?

Funded eligibility is determined by current National Immunisation Program and relevant state requirements.

Children

Children aged six months to less than five years are eligible for a funded seasonal influenza vaccine under the National Immunisation Program. Influenza vaccine can generally be given at the same visit as scheduled childhood vaccines.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and over are eligible for funded influenza vaccination.

Pregnancy

Pregnant people are eligible for funded influenza vaccination and are recommended to receive it during every pregnancy. It can be given at any stage of pregnancy.

People aged 65 and over

Adults aged 65 years and over are eligible for a funded age-specific vaccine designed to produce a stronger immune response.

Medical risk conditions

People aged six months and over with specified medical conditions that increase the risk of severe influenza or complications may be eligible for a funded vaccine.

Confirm current eligibility

Eligibility, products and state-funded programs can change. Contact reception before booking if you are unsure whether your vaccine will be funded.

Private vaccination

Flu vaccination for people outside funded groups.

Annual vaccination is recommended even when a person is not eligible for a free National Immunisation Program dose.

Private seasonal vaccine

Private influenza vaccines may be available for purchase at the clinic, subject to age suitability and stock. A consultation or administration fee may also apply.

Workplace and travel needs

People may choose vaccination to reduce influenza risk at work, before travel or when caring for vulnerable family members. Your clinician can advise on timing and suitability.

Vaccine product

The vaccine offered depends on your age, clinical circumstances, available products and current seasonal recommendations.

Timing

When should you receive your flu vaccine?

Vaccination is generally offered from April onwards to provide protection ahead of the main influenza season, which often peaks between June and September.

Before the peak season

Protection takes time to develop after vaccination and gradually decreases. Your clinician can advise on timing based on age, pregnancy, medical risk, travel and local influenza activity.

Vaccination later in the year

Vaccination should continue to be offered while influenza viruses are circulating and an appropriate, valid seasonal vaccine is available. It may still be worthwhile after the season has begun.

Travel

Consider influenza vaccination before travelling to a destination where influenza is circulating. Influenza can circulate year-round in tropical regions and during the opposite season in the northern hemisphere.

Special dosing considerations

Some patients may need two doses.

Your clinician will check previous vaccination history and the current Australian Immunisation Handbook recommendations.

Children aged 6 months to under 9 years

Children in this age group may need two influenza vaccine doses at least four weeks apart in the first year they are vaccinated. The number of doses depends on their previous influenza vaccination history.

After transplant

People receiving influenza vaccination for the first time after a haematopoietic stem-cell or solid-organ transplant may require two doses at least four weeks apart. Specialist and current handbook guidance should be followed.

Pregnancy

Influenza vaccination is recommended during every pregnancy, regardless of when a previous seasonal dose was received. Your clinician can coordinate timing with other pregnancy vaccines.

Immunocompromised patients

Vaccine choice and timing may require individual assessment based on the condition, treatment and specialist advice.

Your appointment

Before and after vaccination.

Your clinician completes a brief suitability check and explains expected reactions and aftercare.

What to tell us
